About USB Connectors
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the most common connector family, but also the most confusing. The same USB-C connector can support vastly different capabilities depending on the cable and devices involved.
The USB-C Problem
- USB 2.0: 480 Mbps (same connector)
- USB 3.2 Gen 2: 10 Gbps (same connector)
- USB4: 40 Gbps (same connector)
- Thunderbolt 4: 40 Gbps (same connector)
Power Delivery Confusion
- Basic USB: 5V @ 0.5A = 2.5W
- USB BC 1.2: 5V @ 1.5A = 7.5W
- USB PD 3.0: Up to 100W
- USB PD 3.1 EPR: Up to 240W
