About USB Connectors

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the most common connector family, but also the most confusing. The same USB-C connector can support vastly different capabilities depending on the cable and devices involved.

The USB-C Problem

  • USB 2.0: 480 Mbps (same connector)
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2: 10 Gbps (same connector)
  • USB4: 40 Gbps (same connector)
  • Thunderbolt 4: 40 Gbps (same connector)

Power Delivery Confusion

  • Basic USB: 5V @ 0.5A = 2.5W
  • USB BC 1.2: 5V @ 1.5A = 7.5W
  • USB PD 3.0: Up to 100W
  • USB PD 3.1 EPR: Up to 240W
